John Mowen
Author/Digital Artist/Professor

Background
A social psychologist, John Mowen is a Regents Professor in the Marketing Department at Oklahoma State University.  He is the author of ten books in the areas of consumer behavior, high-stakes decision-making, and motivation and leadership.  In addition, he is a digital artist working in a symphonic expressionism genre in which visual art is linked to music.  He has held exhibitions in Arizona, at the Omniplex in Oklahoma City, The OSU Foundation in Stillwater, and the Wild Fork restaurant in Tulsa.

Main Focus
John's latest book is Beyond Leadership:  The Beacon and the GREAT ROCK.  The book argues that leaders can be good or bad (e.g., Churchill or Hitler).  Thus we should train Beacons, who motivate people toward achieving noble goals.  A short and concise book, Beyond Leadership is composed of 26 two-page chapters.  Each chapter begins with an original digital art image and haiku of John’s creation that visually depicts a key idea.  Based upon ten years of research, the book condenses the core ideas of leadership and motivation into nine principles, which are represented by the acronym—GREAT ROCK.

            Goals:    Make them Noble
            Resources:        Cultivate Them
            Emotions:          Manage Them
            Action:              Take It Decidedly
            Tasks:              Complete Them Competently

Responsibility    Take It and Give It
            Originality:         Invent to Succeed
            Compete:          But Win Through Teamwork
            Knowledge:       Know Yourself and Others.
