Background
Mary J. Stanaszek, author of the illustrated children’s book, Sara Wants to Know, is a newcomer to the area of children's literature, as her first professional career was in the field of health care information. Interest in comparative religious studies and interfaith dialogue led to obtaining a degree in Ethics and Religion from the University of Oklahoma and subsequently returning to the university where she currently participates in Outreach activities in the Religious Studies Program. When not on campus, she divides her time between Colorado and Florida.
Main Focus
I wrote the story because I wanted to encourage understanding and respect for the diversity we find among those we encounter every day in our journey through life. Because of my belief in the importance of seeking understanding and mutual respect among people with diverse backgrounds and practices, I wanted to show a child’s natural willingness to reach out to the differences in others when dealing with feelings common to everyone.
Being open to the value of diverse ideas and having respect for ideas and practices not necessarily similar to our own can provide a common ground for dialogue, much needed in the world today. If we are willing to search, wisdom is to be found all around us, as well as within.
Offerings
Mary is available to share her children’s stories with pre-school and elementary age students in any setting. She has also developed a guide for teachers and counselors to use the Sara book in dealing with emotions, coping skills, and value development.
