While studying World War II, all eight graders from Independence Middle School participated in the Holocaust Art Education Project. They were inspired to write sonnets and free verse poetry. Their symbol shows what happens when a world is intolerant of the differences around them. But out of the darkness we see life beginning anew with flowers gazing towards light. There are ribbons representing people of all races, nationalities, ethnicities, and religions interwoven with each other.
