Adult FOCUS Forum
The Adult Education Ministry of the First Christian Church of Oklahoma City presents its Fall FOCUS Forum Series on the timely theme: The Prophetic Faith Today. The series will illustrate that the biblical prophetic tradition does not dwell on prophecy, but on the prophetic mission to voice the call of God for both justice and compassion in the ordering of culture and religious life in the world today. Each Session will be held in the chapel of First Christian Church on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, September 13, Our first speaker will be Michael Korenblit, author-educator and President of the Respect Diversity Foundation. The Foundation seeks to help people of all ages understand and appreciate the diverse culture in which we live. In addition, Korenblit is the co-author of the book UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, a true story of love and survival during the Holocaust. It is the story of his parent’s survival and the love and courage it took to endure. Michael’s parent’s story forms a background for Michael’s work to hold before people the need for the prophetic vision of justice, respect and
mercy.
This session sets the frame work for the whole series on The Prophetic Faith Today.

Launching of Respect Diversity Art & Poetry Contest
With Gil McGregor, Color Commentator for the Hornets Basketball Team
Edmond, OK – First graders at Washington Irving Elementary School launched the statewide Respect Diversity Art & Poetry Contest during an assembly on Thursday, October 12th at 8:45 A.M. with Gil McGregor, commentator for the Hornets. Mr. McGregor shared with them a favorite diversity story titled THE CRAYON BOX THAT TALKED, and he talked with them about how diversity makes our country great. Teacher Colleen Iasiello and her students presented to Mr. McGregor a class-made African doll, one of many award-winning diversity dolls.
Students from pre-kindergarteners through twelfth graders throughout the state of Oklahoma are celebrating diversity in creative ways as they explore issues of cultural diversity, human rights and global peace through the arts. They collaborate on symbols that show respect for diversity. These works of art are entered in the contest and then exhibited at the Kirkpatrick Science & Air Space Museum at Omniplex.
Sponsors for the Respect Diversity Symbol Exhibit include the Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, MetroFamily Magazine, Oklahoma Natural Gas, ICelebrateDiversity.com, the Jewish Foundation of Oklahoma City and Wal-Mart Stores.

National Call-in Day
for a Department of Peace
September 21st
The National Congressional Call-in Day for a Department of Peace is today, September 21st, at high schools and colleges across the country.
Join us by taking action. We all, student or not, can call and write our Members of Congress.
September 21st is celebrated across the globe by individuals, organizations, and nations as the International Day of Peace. On this day, the Student Peace Alliance will collectively engage our elected officials in dialogue about the Department of Peace and Nonviolence Bill currently in the US House and US Senate. A national call-in day is an effective means for students across the country to express to elected officials their support for a Department of Peace. On the National Call-in Day students will organize at campuses and schools across the country to call their elected officials. Students will speak to House and Senate staff about the importance of peace and how the Department of Peace will fund peace-building initiatives throughout our nation and globe.
On September 21st, the Student Peace Alliance will be joined by the larger campaign for a Department of Peace in calling on our elected officials to stand with us in support of a Department of Peace. This will be the first collective national Student Peace Alliance action. Let’s make a statement on Thursday that we are an alliance that acts locally with a strong national impact.
Special note on Senate Anniversary: September 22nd is the first anniversary of the bills introduction into the Senate. Please be sure to contact your senators today and tomorrow. Both senate sponsors are retiring this year so we need a new sponsor to introduce the legislation next year!
Let us know you called!
