Origami & Ikebana Artist

 

Background

 

             Shirley Burnett (Yukiko) was born on the extreme northern tip of Honshu Island of Japan in Aomori Prefecture.  After Elementary School she moved to Tokyo to live with her brother.  Even before moving to Tokyo, she developed an interest in Ikebana (flower arranging), Origami (paper folding), singing, and Japanese traditional dancing.  she was certified in Ikebana and received her license in 1975 in Osaka, Japan.  She held many classes in Japan on Ikebana and Origami.  After coming to the United States, and receiving her American Citizenship, she started teaching school students, and adults in Military Bases in Florida and Oklahoma.  She also has taught and assisted in Culture Events at the University of Oklahoma (OU), University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), Rose State College (RSC), and several other organizations in Oklahoma and Texas. 

 

           

Main Focus

            Yukiko’s main focus is teaching about Japanese culture through the arts.

 

Offerings

 

            Yukiko teaches about the Japanese culture as she teaches Origami Workshops to students of all ages.  She teaches Ikebana to junior high students on up.
