Zaineb Attia

Islamic Studies Educator

Background:

Zaineb Attia known as Zena to her friends, immigrated to the U.S. in the early eighties.  Her old home in Nasariah would soon be replaced with married student housing in College Station , Texas .  The different cultural atmosphere proved to be difficult but welcoming at the same time.  For her entire life before coming to America , she was surrounded completely by family and kin.  Her new life began with just she and her husband.  Fortunately, she was blessed to meet some women from various local churches who were part of a community service program in aiding women from various local churches who were part of a community service program in aiding international students.  They accepted her as if she was their family and aided her in her transitioning to her new world.  Her first hurdle was the English language – a language she believed she could never learn – was it I before e or was it e before I?  Too many rules, and too many exceptions!  In due time she was having chats over coffee, and soon working in local businesses . . . and, of course, driving!

Now twenty-four years later, she is the mother of four children with the oldest a recent college graduate, and the youngest a happy fourth grader.  She has owned a business for the last 14 years in Edmond where her clientele has become family.
