Background:
Willie Koenig is an innovative musician who has traveled, studied, and performed extensively in Latin America. He received a degree in Spanish and music from Southern Nazarene University, where he also studied ethnomusicology. He currently serves as an Artist-in-Residence for the Oklahoma Arts Council, in addition to playing with several bands.
Main Focus:
Through hands-on arts activities, Willie Koenig teaches percussion, music, and dance, showing the ties between these art forms and their cultures. He has used Latin American, African and Stomp-style percussion as the musical base for exploration. By learning an instrument and playing together, the students develop confidence and healthy group interaction skills.
Offerings:
? Latin American or African residence: (K – adult) students engage in hands-on percussion instruction, while learning about the ties between music and culture.
? Stomp residence: (4th-adult) students create instruments from everyday items, explore ways to play them, and learn to work together through music.
? Teacher instruction: teachers learn how to motivate kids by combining hands-on music with their curriculum.
